WATER LILY LOTUS
I asked a
gracefully resting on the water
with a cotton rose covering her face
and a voluptuous forehead ──
won’t you come to my study？
Ah, I hear you
say, the lotus girl.
Did the venerated Chou Tun’yi, author
of On the love of the lotus,
love the water lily blossom or the lotus
when writing “centered and upright,
it neither sends runners nor branches out.
Its fragrance agreeable, it stands in perfect repose
rising out of the mud purified
of all ill spirits” ── was he writing
about the white water lily or the sacred louts？
The powdered stalk of the water lily droops speechless.
So it goes：” The Yangtze River abounds in lotus seeds,
lotus leaves as far as one can see.”
Ching revolutionary Chang Taiyan
says it’s one of our two pandas;
from the far end of a reed he writes
as far as one can see in ancient calligraphy.
So ” fish swim east of the leaves,
fish swim west of the leaves.” you see.
The water lily teeters its head and yells
” it’s a man swimming east of the leaves,
a man swimming west of the leaves,”
the water lily bursts out！
But that’s the lotus’s problem.
What about your sleeping water lily girl？
It’s ── it’s none of your business ？
Oh ？ None of your business ？
I ── I’m not telling you ！
